AI hype

Loosely inspired by Prime's video about I Think They Are Lying To You and more personal opinions that were occupying my mind for last few months.

Purely personal observations, do not take anything seriously, read it with a smile/smirk on your face.

It's a hastily written down stream of consciousness and thoughts (you know, like the next-token prediction in response.choices?.[0]?.message?.reasoning_content)

I am an AI btw, an Actual Italian. And also hypocritical, and so are you. And that's fine.

Warning 1: Every single, badly chosen word on this blog is written by me
Warning 2: I write code mixed with LLM-generated code all day, every day, with a twist though. I use local models only. I want to believe that I am exploiting them nepo-babies by doing so, foolishly.

The current AI-craze is driven by Money and People.

The perfect ingredients to a (temporarily) successful boom/money-grab are:

  • Fear/Panic
  • Bias(es)
  • Addiction
  • Economics
  • Anthropomorphization

With "Fear/Panic" I mean the proposed industry-wide CEO/Investors-AI-pilled-driven job-cuts and Token-sellers proposing next-token generators and statistics as a digitalized and anthropomorphized replacement for your expertise and knowledge. All while playing the "reverse Robin Hood", stealing from the internet and intellectual works, and selling it back to you as a service.

BTW the only way this works out, of course, is by making you fearful about your future. Not only you: investors, CEO's and such are all fueling this self-fullfilling prophecy of "AI in everything or we'll miss out big".

AI is essentially fast-code, the digital equivalent of fast-food/fast-fashion. It makes you temporarily feel full, while making you forget the real cost of the actions you are taking. It's "penny-wise, pound-foolish" all over again, in a different disguised form, prioritizing output over value/quality.

With Bias(es) I mean specifically the following ones, read more about them (or let them summarize them for you by an AI 😁):

  • Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect: the gist is that you notice LLM errors/made-up-things in areas you know well, while almost blindly trusting it in others
  • Automation Bias:
  • AI overconfidence: code/prose looks professional and flawless. that's where code rot comes from AI-infested codebases.
  • Dunning-Kruger Effect: the real bomb for the imposter syndrome in some people. inversely proportional function to actual skill of a person vs their confidence.

and many more I might have missed, but that's not the point.

The point is that it is, simply put, a trap: and we're graciously falling for it, even though knowingly.

With "Addiction" I mean that it exploits your need for your next dopamin hit, it's a slot machine for the next-token, disguised as a "thinking" machine that amazes with their sycophantically generated responses using next-token prediction, diffusion, [put next tech amazing here].

With "Economics" I mean: Take a look at the inflation and more generally the financial well-being of people/families over the past few years, and tell me with all your respect for yourself that we are not in deep shit and it degenerated quickly fast. Like "cursor-composer-2"-fast. The concentration of wealth is real, and we're all making it even more real with our actions out of fear. The hype around "AI productivity" is disguised as a justification for hiring freezes, wage cuts or more generally because the actual business economics are not that well off, and the company just wants to play the game of "we're sooo in this AI-spiel that we can afford to replace human knowledge-workers with machines now".

The "Anthropomorphization" part should be pretty clear now: the statistical/mathematical nature of next-token prediction fits perfectly in the UI to make it look more "human". Mimicking human speech and flow of words, you're eager with anticipation if the next response will actually spit out the answer you wanted to hear, just couldn't find the words/solution for it.

I have a pretty reductionist take on this whole situation.

With that out of the way, I think there are still productive and conscious ways to leverage LLM technology.
First of all as an aid/tool for knowledge work in general, with emphasis on "tool". I am of course biased by my software developer profession and hobby: e.g. scaffolding, prototyping, exploration, automation, and much more.
Secondly, I am sure these tools can be extremely powerful in medicine/research/diagnostics and for accessibility. That's really, really cool.
Lastly, by removing the anthropomorphization, because I think that's one of the biggest selling points and addictive part of today's usage with LLMs. It's not a coincidence those tool generate text with a sycophantic tone.
But if you think that's going to happen, well.. I admire your hope and positivity.

AI must be anthropomorphized so that we can relate to it; and at the end of the day we like role-playing, addictive things and are gullible to well-sold statistics and convincing arguments.

But that's just my thinking process. Wait, actually...

PS: the "Wait, actually..." is a common phrase regurgitated by Qwen models in their reasoning blocks, wanted to end this blog post with something silly.

I wanted to end this post with some parts of this beautiful alliteration/song by Luke Nickle (fast version, slow version)

I’m an anal imposition
an american implosion
